*One-pointedness* *(ekaggatā)*

Unlike the previous four jhāna factors, one-pointedness is not specifically mentioned in the standard formula for the first jhāna, but it is included among the jhāna factors by the Mahāvedalla Sutta (M I 294) as well as in the Abhidhamma and the commentaries. One-pointedness is a universal mental concomitant, the factor by virtue of which the mind is centred upon its object. It brings the mind to a single point, the point occupied by the object.

One-pointedness is used in the text as a synonym for concentration (samādhi) which has the characteristic of non-distraction, the function of eliminating distractions, non-wavering as its manifestation, and happiness as its proximate cause (Vism 85; PP 85). As a jhāna factor one-pointedness is always directed to a wholesome object and wards off unwholesome influences, in particular the hindrance of sensual desire. As the hindrances are absent in jhāna one-pointedness acquires special strength, based on the previous sustained effort of concentration.

Besides the five jhāna factors, the first jhāna contains a great number of other mental factors functioning in unison as coordinate members of a single state of consciousness. Already the Anupada Sutta lists such additional components of the first jhāna as contact, feeling, perception, volition, consciousness, desire, decision, energy, mindfulness, equanimity and attention (M III 25). In the Abhidhamma literature this is extended still further up to thirty-three indispensable components. Nevertheless, only five states are called the factors of the first jhāna, for only these have the functions of inhibiting the five hindrances and fixing the mind in absorption. For the jhāna to arise all these five factors must be present simultaneously, exercising their special operations:

But applied thought directs the mind onto the object; sustained thought keeps it anchored there. Happiness [rapture] produced by the success of the effort refreshes the mind whose effort has succeeded through not being distracted by those hindrances; and bliss [happiness] intensifies it for the same reason. Then unification aided by this directing onto, this anchoring, this refreshing and this intensifying, evenly and rightly centres the mind with its remaining associated states on the object consisting in unity. Consequently possession of five factors should be understood as the arising of these five, namely, applied thought, sustained thought, happiness [rapture], bliss [happiness], and unification of mind. For it is when these are arisen that jhāna is said to be arisen, which is why they are called the five factors of possession. (Vism 146; PP 152)

Each jhāna factor serves as support for the one which succeeds it. Applied thought must direct the mind to its object in order for sustained thought to anchor it there. Only when the mind is anchored can the interest develop which will culminate in rapture. As rapture develops it brings happiness to maturity, and this spiritual happiness, by providing an alternative to the fickle pleasures of the senses, aids the growth of one-pointedness. In this way, as Nāgasena explains, all the other wholesome states lead to concentration, which stands at their head like the apex on the roof of a house (Mil 38–39).

C(Half) Sensitive!!!

Cow idea killing humans is not new to India. But to get to the roots, it will shake up the entire story upside down like a thriller. The point is that,they the great cow lovers can be proved wrong from all sides. While some of them eat all kinds of meat on sly, but on the frontal, they behave as if , they never let it happen in public.

Let us look at the claim that Cow is a sensitive animal. If u talk to people who love or own a pet dog or a cat, u can make out that these animals are much more sensitive than cows while they behave with  humans by the way they exist or carry on with their own day to day activities. I have seen dogs which have given up food until death, just because owners scolded them. In our own house we see cats come over the top of our home to breed. They make  it a point to do us a favour before they land up( while we mind to kill the rat that bothered us , they kill, eat and throw it in front of home as a proof that they should be looked after well. They wait right upto the last minute every morning to get their meals and then make noises if delayed.If we dont talk to them in low voice or if we shout or scold them when they enter our  private rooms, we usually see , they are so sensitive that they will not return  to our home for a long long time or for ever. Well, if you talk about the milk that we drink is of a holy cow,look at who forced you the idea to drink. Is it a cow? Did you ask their permission to snatch away the milk which is supposed to be for their calf. Now science is out to prove that cockroach milk is the best. Gandhi liked to drink goat's milk. If we look deeper, It is clear there is something behind this new idea of cow and its slaughter which happened all these years in front of them and that it they who were alseep all previously have suddenly woken up to the idea to protecting them.It is to be understood that people in rural  side, all those who pray also would like to relinquish  them before they die. I asked them why dont they wait until these holy creatures die , the answer was the ones who pick it after death, wish to be paid. To save themselves of a few worthless bucks, they want to sell it to butchers before its death. It those who never rared one, or who is concerned about cows who are causing such uproar.It is those who want to make a future for themselves, or ask for few bucks for themselves or those who want to show their superiority over others who are more interested in the Idea. If we can study it a bit, we can also ask is it that  It easily feeds the family too. They can live for sure when all else fails if they can hide behind cow. They can run their families easily . Govt can be  forced to fund . Why govt, they can raise funds on private tell good sober stories to feed both themselves and the cows, forget cows, they will never complain, how much is fed and what is the Quality. Why not buffalo , which also looks the same .Cow milk differs from buffalo milk in richness and composition. Buffalo milk has lower cholesterol but more calories and fat compared with cow's milk. So, can you change your preferences.If cow is much precious, it would have better chances to meditate and attain liberation and wouldn't depend on humans. Humans are a species who can think and act and live not only for food, but also to help self and ego to try to be happy as long as they can imagine. Cattle smells everything and tries to eat what smells good. If their Gods preferred Cows, he/they would have given them guns to kill all humans and let them live- those holy cows- peacefully ever after.If they are worried about non-killing of living beings it should get applied to all animals, why animals there are so many beings who are very tiny , some stuck in the curds alive, which they relish a lot. They a should learn that our own body contains millions of  bacteria some of which are good and some bad. If bad over powers good, they wont pray krisna, but buy a pill which can kill all of those tiny little beings, hence non killing of a being wont arise at all. By the way all animals have all the features that match the cow. So with the pig. It is out of love for an animal which can protect them  when they need it,that which has made them kill humans who are not related to them, to ensure in the name of cow, they can claim superiority - that which made nation go enraged over the idea!!!
